2024 Scholarship Winner

2024 Scholarship winner - Mateo Aguirre

It's surreal to think that Vincent has been gone for 2.5 years now.  For those unfamiliar with our son, he was a Senior at Somerville High School, just 17 years old when he tragically lost his life in a car accident on October 8, 2021.  Vincent was kind, easy-going, funny, had a passion for skateboarding and gaming, and the ability to make everyone feel special with his warm hugs and gorgeous blue eyes.  The void he left in our lives is indescribable.

In order to honor Vincent's memory, the Vincent R. Gagliardi Foundation has established an annual scholarship for a deserving SHS senior and is dedicated to promoting teen driver safety awareness.  After carefully considering all the exceptional essays, we are thrilled to award this year's $5,000 scholarship to Mateo Aguirre.

Mateo is an extraordinary young man, excelling in academics and athletics.  Described by his counselor as empathetic, dependable, patient, diligent, and kind, Mateo has proven to be an outstanding student.  In addition to being an honor student, he has been a key player on the Varsity soccer team for four years, served as Captain of the Track and Field team, and been actively involved in various clubs including Key Club, Environmental Club, and Ski Club. Furthermore, as an Eagle Scout and Captain of the Club soccer team - Team Elite, Mateo's dedication is truly commendable.

What truly sets Mateo apart is his compassion. His essay highlighted his work tutoring one of his mother's ESL students and his efforts to ensure that children with special needs could participate in soccer, boosting their confidence, enjoyment, and sense of belonging.  Although Vincent may not have been an honor student or involved in as many extracurricular activities as Mateo, they both shared a common love for kindness.  My hope for Mateo and all graduates is that they not only excel in their academic pursuits but also continue to show warmth and compassion towards others.

Congratulations to Mateo and the Class of 2024.  Your achievements are remarkable, and may you all carry forward the spirit of kindness that both Vincent and Mateo embody.
